NEW DELHI — In a major initiative to secure the future of small and marginal farmers, the Government of India is running the PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana, a pension scheme designed to provide ₹3,000 monthly — or ₹36,000 annually — to eligible farmers after they reach the age of 60.
This scheme is part of a broader push by both the central and state governments to enhance the economic strength of India’s farming community, particularly those in the lower-income bracket. Thousands of farmers across the country are already availing the benefits by enrolling in this contributory pension scheme.
Monthly Contribution Starts as Low as ₹55Farmers between the ages of 18 to 40 years are eligible to apply for the PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana. The monthly contribution amount depends on the age at which the applicant enrolls. For instance, those who join at the age of 18 only need to contribute ₹55 per month until they turn 60.
Upon reaching the age of 60, farmers receive a guaranteed pension of ₹3,000 per month under the scheme — providing financial stability during old age. The scheme ensures that small-scale farmers, often without alternate sources of income post-retirement, can lead a life of dignity and independence.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply? To ensure that the scheme benefits the truly needy, strict eligibility norms are in place:
-
Only small and marginal farmers are eligible to apply.
-
Farmers must own 2 hectares or less of cultivable land.
-
Those owning more than 2 hectares, employed in government jobs, or filing income tax returns are not eligible.
-
Essential documents for registration include Aadhar Card, Age and Income Certificate, Land Records (Khasra-Khatauni), Bank Passbook, and Mobile Number.
Farmers can register for the scheme through their nearest Common Service Centers (CSCs). The enrollment process is simple and requires biometric authentication, document verification, and the opening of a pension account linked to their bank.
The PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana is viewed as a key measure toward rural upliftment and social security. With its minimal entry barrier and long-term benefits, it aims to cover a significant number of farming households in the years to come.
