In a bold move that challenges Jio’s grip on the telecom and entertainment market, is stepping up with its own Live TV service, set to offer an alternative to JioTV+. This latest addition follows the state-owned telecom giant’s recent rebranding and rollout of seven new services aimed at enhancing the user experience and expanding digital accessibility.
BSNL’s Live TV Service: A Unique Offering for FTTH CustomersCurrently undergoing trials in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, BSNL’s Live TV service is being exclusively made available to Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) subscribers. Unlike JioTV+, which relies on data consumption from users’ internet plans, BSNL’s Live TV service stands out with its data-free streaming. In other words, users can continue watching live TV even if there’s a disruption in their internet connection.
An official from BSNL explained that this feature is a “first in India”, marking a new era in uninterrupted entertainment and setting BSNL apart in a market dominated by Jio’s internet-based streaming service. BSNL has collaborated with a partner to facilitate this rollout, with plans to expand the service across the country in phases.
What Makes BSNL’s Service Different?Where JioTV+ uses HLS-based streaming, requiring constant internet data, BSNL’s Live TV service does not consume any data from the user’s existing internet plan. This innovative feature means that even during internet outages, BSNL users can still enjoy their favorite TV channels. It’s a model designed with resilience in mind, ensuring uninterrupted viewing for subscribers, a feature sure to appeal to a wide audience, especially in areas prone to internet connectivity issues.
BSNL’s Live TV service will also integrate Video on Demand (VOD), adding another layer of versatility. Currently, the app is available on the Android TV platform, allowing users to access a variety of live TV channels and on-demand content. To log in, users simply enter their registered mobile number, linked to their FTTH connection, and verify with an OTP, making access straightforward and secure.
A Game-Changer in Telecom Innovation: BSNL’s D2D ServiceIn another innovative move, BSNL, in partnership with Viasat, has successfully trialed its Device-to-Device (D2D) service. This groundbreaking feature will allow users to make audio and video calls directly between devices without the need for a SIM card, a potentially revolutionary offering that could redefine connectivity, particularly in emergency situations or remote areas.
The Future of Digital Access: BSNL’s Strategic PlayWith these recent advancements, BSNL is solidifying its position as a forward-thinking, competitive force in India’s telecom landscape. By focusing on data-free TV streaming and direct device communication, BSNL is not just addressing existing needs but pushing the boundaries of digital accessibility.
As BSNL continues its phased rollout of the Live TV service nationwide, this public-sector giant seems ready to shake up the entertainment and connectivity market with innovative offerings that promise value, resilience, and accessibility.
