An H-1B Redditor narrated the harrowing few hours in the aftermath of the US government's announcement of a $100,000 visa fee, which threw companies into a tizzy. Companies called back all employees, not in the US now, fearing that they would not be able to re-enter the country, before the White House clarified that the new visa fee is not for existing employees. But the chaos was enough to ruin vacations of many as one particular Redditor said: " We didn't deserve it."
"For all of us who were traveling abroad and were asked by their office to come back before midnight, who canceled their plans, said goodbye to loved ones precipitously, missed or will miss important friends & family events, lost money, were extremely stressed and are now upset. I feel you. It's unfair. We didn't deserve it," the Reddit post said.
"And for those who lack compassion, shame on you. You didn't have to see my mom crying because she was about to see me for the 1st time in a few months, that and we were about to spend a week together for the first time in a few years! There are human lives behind the visas. We are people!" the post added.
"When the clarification from the White House happened Saturday around 5-6pm EST, people like me were already on their plane to go back home (i.e., in America). If the same clarification had been done the Friday night, at the time of the proclamation or Saturday early morning, at least, it would have given people a chance not to drop anything they were doing to travel," the Redditor explained the situation why many had to rush back leaving their families abruptly.
Interestingly, the Reddit post drew flak as many MAGA supporters said that the Redditor does not need to make the mother cry and can stay back in their own country with the mother.
"Which is why I support you returning back to your home country full time. We are a family-first movement. We want families to stay together. Just not in our country," one wrote.
"There is a very easy solution here. Go back so your mom doesn’t have to cry and you aren’t displacing Americans and lowering wages for American workers. Please stay in your own country and see your mom everyday lol. Why do yall feel so entitled to American jobs and living here?" another wrote.
