Dormer Governor Andrew Cuomo who had a crushing defeat in the Democratic primary by Zohran Mamdani decided that he will stay in the election as an independent campaigner, If the polls show that he is not the highest-ranked challenger to Mr. Mamdani by early September, he will pledge to drop out of the race, people aware of the developments said.
Cuomo will encourage other challengers, mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, Curtis Silwa, the Republican nominee, Jim Walden, an independent candidate -- to do the same.
The race is now in favor of Mamdani as Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 6 to 1 margin in New York City, and the winner of the Democratic primary is usually a heavy favorite to win the general election.
Mamdani not focused on their backroom deals
Zohran Mamdani's spokesperson Jeffrey Lerner said Mamdani is now focused on making New York City more affordable for New Yorkers, and does not care about Cuomo's renewed interest in the race.
“While Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams are tripping over themselves to cut backroom deals with billionaires and Republicans, Zohran Mamdani is focused on making this city more affordable for New Yorkers,” Lerner said in a statement to the NYT “That’s the choice this November.”
'When you get knocked down...'
“The general election is in November and I am in it to win it,” Cuomo announced in a video. “Thank you for believing in me, in my agenda and in my experience, and I am truly sorry that I let you down,” he says in the video. “But as my grandfather used to say, when you get knocked down, learn the lesson and pick yourself back up and get in the game, and that is what I’m going to do. The fight to save our city isn’t over.”
