Dhaka: Former PM Khaleda Zia-led BNP has voiced concern that “certain quarters” are attempting to view Bangladesh politics through a “religious angle”, as it accused the country’s largest Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) of trying to delay the Feb national poll.

“We hope voters will once again prove through their verdict that Bangladesh remains a non-communal state,” BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Monday. He said it’s unfortunate that in today’s Bangladesh, “various attempts are being made to see it from a religious angle”. BNP alleged that JeI’s demand for a Nov referendum on the ‘July Charter’ and to hold the poll under a proportional representation (PR) system are part its strategy to derail the electoral process. On JeI’s demand for the PR system, Election Commission said it had no additional comments on the matter.
