NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday publicly criticised his nephew, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar , for causing a family rift due to political ambitions. Campaigning for his grandnephew Yugendra Pawar in Baramati , Sharad Pawar mimicked Ajit and mocked his emotional appeal at a rally that happened a day before.

Sharad Pawar addressed Ajit’s comments on preventing family rifts. "My parents and brothers never taught me the sin to break the house (family)," Sharad Pawar declared at a Kanheri town rally near Baramati.

Sharad Pawar recounted how Ajit switched sides to secure the deputy CM post with BJP's Devendra Fadnavis in 2019, only for the government to last four days. He criticised Ajit for seeking power at the cost of family unity, questioning, “If you fail to get the position only once, will you break the house (family)?”

He insisted he never created a family rift and assured, “Going forward, regardless of anyone taking any stand, I will not go on the wrong track. I will ensure that my family will remain united.”

Sharad Pawar also referred to Ajit’s changing rhetoric from previous campaigns, noting a shift from a rational appeal to an emotional pitch. Sharad Pawar recalled how Ajit had cautioned voters during the Lok Sabha elections, stating "During Lok Sabha polls, people were told not to fall prey to emotion. People were told that Pawar Saheb (Sharad Pawar) would shed tears and seek votes (for his daughter Supriya Sule)."

He then referenced Ajit's recent address, saying "You might have seen in yesterday's speech...", while simultaneously pulling out a handkerchief and imitating Ajit by pretending to dry his eyes.

This came after Ajit Pawar accused his uncle of creating the split in the family and and indulging in "low-level politics" as the NCP leader is fielded against Sharad Pawar's grandson Yugendra Pawar in the upcoming Maharashtra elections .

"I was told that Saheb (Sharad Pawar) instructed someone to file a nomination against me ... Saheb created the split within the family," Ajit Pawar had said.In an emotional outburst, the deputy CM further added, "I just want to say that politics should not be brought to such a low level because it takes generations to be united but it doesn't take a single moment to break the family."

He had earlier acknowledged that his decision to field his wife Sunetra against his cousin Supriya Sule, daughter of Sharad Pawar, in the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency was an error in judgement.
