NEW DELHI: Several leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc on Friday staged a symbolic protest against the Election Commission of India ’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls .
Congress MP and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi , Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav , along with several MPs from INDIA bloc parties, tore placards with SIR written on them and threw them into a dustbin as part of their demonstration on the Parliament premises.
Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) over its decision to implement the SIR nationwide.
In a post on X, Kharge alleged that the move was politically motivated. "The Modi government wants to suppress the votes of the poor, Dalits, tribals, backward classes, minorities, and the deprived, so that it can amend the Indian Constitution in line with the Manusmriti," he wrote.
He further claimed that the BJP and RSS are attempting to use the revision process to disenfranchise marginalised groups. "The RSS-BJP has always sought to deprive the weaker sections of society of their voting rights, and now, through the use of SIR, it is determined to fulfil its long-standing agenda," he said.
The Election Commission had announced on June 24 that it would begin a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across the country, a copy of which was made available on Friday by the news agency ANI. "The Commission has now decided to begin the Special Intensive Revision in the entire country for the discharge of its constitutional mandate to protect the integrity of electoral rolls," the order stated.
Kharge also joined the protest by MPs of the INDIA bloc against the move. The protest entered its fifth day on Friday.
The MPs also held a march from the Gandhi statue on the Parliament premises ahead of the day’s session, according to news agency ANI.
Kharge also posted a video of the protest on his X account, which showed him tearing a placard and throwing it into a bin.
