Ahmedabad: Eight doctors and an associate professor allegedly colluded with over 50 pharmaceutical companies to conduct " unauthorised drug trials " on patients at V S Hospital run by Ahmedabad MC since 2021, a preliminary investigation by a five-member committee has revealed.
The alleged trials involved patients with autoimmune diseases, rabies, skin diseases and other conditions. Payments by these companies were allegedly directly deposited into the bank accounts of the doctors involved, said a committee member.
AMC has suspended the associate professor, Dr Devang Rana, and the eight contracted doctors implicated in the unauthorised trials.
"No ethical committee was established according to National Medical Commission and Drug Controller of India regulations during the tenure of the then superintendent," deputy municipal commissioner Bharat Parmar said at a press conference on Saturday.
The matter came to light following a complaint filed by a Congress corporator, Rajshree Kesari, in Feb.
Dr Supriya Malhotra, a member of the investigation committee, confirmed that clinical research had been ongoing for the past four years, with an estimated "57 to 58 companies conducting drug trials". In Jan 2019, the municipal corporation built Rs 800-crore SVP Hospital with 1,600 beds on the VS Hospital campus.
