KURUKSHETRA : Three members of a family including father and his two daughters were killed of burn injuries and suffocation due to smoke in a tragic mishap, as their moving vehicle caught fire near Mohri village in Shahabad police station area in Kurukshetra district on the National Highway (NH) 44 (GT Road) on Saturday late night.
Four other members of this family were injured and referred for treatment to PGIMER, Chandigarh, as they were rescued by the passerby and the district police. They were travelling in a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga car, which reportedly caught fire from the rear side suspected due to some sparking.
The deceased were identified as Sandeep Kumar, who worked as a professor in Chandigarh University and his two daughters Pari and Amanat. The four injured include Sandeep’s wife Laxmi, his brother Sushil who was driving the car, mother Sudesh and Sushil’s wife Aarti, who are undergoing treatment at PGIMER, said the police.
As per the information, the family lived in Chandigarh but natively belonged to Rahmana village in Sonepat district of Haryana. The family had gone to their native village to celebrate Diwali festival and they were returning to Chandigarh, when the tragic mishap took place.
Sushil’s son Yash had a narrow escape unhurt from the incident.
The police said as per the statement of the surviving family members, their moving vehicle caught fire due to some sparking that took place towards the boot side. The vehicle got centrally locked and the occupant persons were not able to alight. The police said Sushil somehow managed to unlock the car and bring some help.
“Three of the eight persons traveling in the vehicle died due to suffocation and burn injuries, while three are undergoing treatment at PGIMER, Chandigarh. Car’s driver Sushil is also suffering some problems in eyes due to burns and smoke. The post-mortem of the deceased persons was conducted on Sunday and further investigation is being conducted”, said the investigating officer (IO) SI Jaswant Singh.
