NEW DELHI: Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren accused the BJP of promoting division in society and neglecting marginalized communities in response to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's remarks suggesting that Jharkhand could become a " mini-Bangladesh ".
The comments from Sarma, who criticised the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government over infiltration issues, ignited a sharp response from Soren.
Soren condemned the BJP's rhetoric, saying, "These people stir up Hindu-Muslim tensions; they incite fights among brothers and create divisions in households."
He urged BJP leaders to hold their Prime Minister accountable for border security and the alleged influx of migrants from Bangladesh. “When he wasn't in power, which book did he refer to in order to govern? Who is responsible for infiltrators coming from Bangladesh after the riots?” Soren said.
The chief minister pointed out that India belongs to its people and directed criticism toward the central government's management of border security. "It's in the hands of the central government, the BSF, and the state government," he said. “We do not need any propaganda from anyone,” he added, referring to the political narrative being pushed by the BJP.
Soren also took aim at the BJP's failure to support the underprivileged, claiming, "Today, they do not have money to support farmers, labourers, the poor, the elderly, students, or women, but they have enough to waive the debts of their billionaire friends." In contrast, he highlighted the Jharkhand government's initiatives to provide financial relief, including waiving electricity dues and ensuring 24-hour power supply to previously underserved areas.
Sarma in his initial comments had highlighted the BJP's stance on the alleged impact of infiltrators on Jharkhand's culture and identity.
The Assam CM had lashed out at the Jharkhand government over the issue of infiltration, alleging that it could turn the state into "mini-Bangladesh."
Himanta Sarma said, "The infiltrators are causing a huge disturbance in Jharkhand's culture and 'Adivasi asmita.' If this continues, Jharkhand will see a demographic change, and it will become a mini-Bangladesh. Santhal Pargana is in line to become mini-Bangladesh."
Sarma elaborated on his party's commitments, saying, “If an immigrant marries a tribal girl, their children will not be entitled to Scheduled Tribe benefits. We will ensure that the girl does not contest elections for the head of the tribe.”
He also expressed concerns about the influence of Congress leaders in the region, threatening legal action against Jharkhand Minister Irfan Ansari for his remarks about BJP's Sita Soren.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey too had alleged that both the Congress and JMM are indifferent to tribal issues due to vote bank politics. He attributed the 11% rise in the Muslim population in Santhal Pargana to Bangladeshi infiltration, vowing that the BJP would not rest until such infiltrators are removed.
Jharkhand will vote in two phases for 81 Jharkhand Assembly seats on November 13 and November 20.The counting of votes is set for November 23, with a significant number of first-time and young voters participating in the elections.
