Former union minister and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Saturday alleged that police vehicles are being misused to provide financial support to candidates of ruling parties in Maharashtra ahead of the assembly elections.
"We have come to know from many districts, from officials that candidates from the ruling parties are getting financial assistance for polls, that police vehicles are being used. Officials of the police department have also said that," Pawar claimed.
Speaking to reporters at his Govindbag residence, Pawar expressed a desire to speak more openly on the matter but chose to withhold details to protect the officials who provided him with the information.
At the press conference, Pawar was joined by his grandnephews and party candidates, Yugendra Pawar (Baramati) and Rohit Pawar (Karjat-Jamkhed). Notably, the Pawar family’s annual gathering at Govindbag was missing Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his family.
Pawar also criticized the Eknath Shinde-led government for what he described as a "unique feature" – delivering official candidate forms (A and B forms) by aircraft. He was referring to reports that Shinde had used aircraft to dispatch the mandatory forms for party candidates.
The general assembly election is scheduled to be held in Maharashtra on November 20, 2024.
