NEW DELHI: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday hailed the growing role of women in India's Armed Forces, crediting them with key contributions in counter-terror operations and maritime endurance feats. Speaking at the flag-in ceremony of INSV Tarini in Goa, Singh said women personnel played a “crucial role” in Operation Sindoor , India’s recent action against terrorism in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
“Women pilots and other female soldiers played a crucial role in the effective action taken by India against terrorism in Pakistan and PoK during Operation Sindoor,” the defence minister said. He added that women have excelled in every responsibility, from the icy heights of Siachen to the deep seas.
He highlighted recent milestones including 17 women graduating from the National Defence Academy this month and the opening of Sainik Schools to girls. “The circle of India’s security has only strengthened with the participation of women,” he added.
The event marked the return of Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A, who completed Navika Sagar Parikrama II, becoming the first Indians to circumnavigate the globe in double-handed mode. Over eight months, they covered 25,600 nautical miles, stopping at Fremantle (Australia), Lyttleton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falkland Islands) and Cape Town (South Africa).
Calling their expedition the "epitome of Nari Shakti ," Singh praised their courage and mental resilience in overcoming isolation and oceanic challenges. He urged them to document their experiences to inspire future generations, especially young women.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi called their feat a symbol of India’s maritime strength and national pride. A photo essay book titled ‘Breaking Waves, Making History’ was released during the ceremony, chronicling the duo’s journey.
The voyage was flagged off on October 2, 2024, from INS Mandovi in Goa. The first edition of the expedition was completed by a six-member all-women crew in 2017-18.
