Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ( BJP ) intent to back Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray ’s son, Amit Thackeray , in the Mahim assembly seat for the upcoming state elections. The Shiv Sena, part of the ruling alliance led by chief minister Eknath Shinde, has also fielded a candidate, Sada Sarvankar, from Mahim, leading to internal discussions about a potential solution.
“We will try to find a solution to support Amit Thackeray’s debut,” Fadnavis told reporters, noting that the BJP would work to reduce the number of rebel candidates within its own ranks, though “friendly fights” were likely in some constituencies.
Mahim, a symbolic constituency known as the birthplace of the undivided Shiv Sena in 1966 and later the MNS in 2006, is witnessing a high-stakes battle. Amit Thackeray’s entry has intensified competition as both the Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) have fielded strong candidates. While the BJP and CM Shinde initially agreed to support Amit Thackeray, concerns were raised by Shinde’s faction that non-participation might lead loyalists to shift toward Uddhav’s faction.
In light of Ajit Pawar’s recent remarks that former ally R.R. Patil “backstabbed” him by ordering an inquiry into the multi-crore irrigation scam, Fadnavis acknowledged that the probe began when Congress and the NCP were in power but refrained from further comment.
Maharashtra will hold its assembly elections on November 20, with results set to be declared on November 23.
