NEW DELHI: Jamtara, a hub of cyber crime, is in the spotlight again due to the "derogatory comments "made by senior Congress functionary and state minister Irfan Ansari and Congress candidate for the seat about his BJP rival Sita Soren ahead of assembly polls in Jharkhand .
Soren is no ordinary tribal candidate. Widow of the late Durga Soren , eldest son of JMM founder Shibu Soren who was almoust unanimously seen as his father's successor before his untimely death, joined BJP after severing ties with her family after Hemant Soren assumed the party’s leadership.
While filing his nomination, Ansari, the sitting MLA, reportedly dubbed Soren “rejected" who had been borrowed by BJP. Faced with the uproard that he triggered, the Congress veteran has back-pedalled and, offered , apology while still maintaining that the video of the purported comment was morphed. Congress, perhaps, sensing the damage potential of the words uttered by Ansari , has also distanced itself from the comment.
BJP, however, is not letting go of the matter. While Soren herself, while addressing a press conference, turned emotional, her party has called Ansari's remarks an insult to women and tribals. The attack has been led by in-charge of Jharkhand campaign, Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, and the co-incharge, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, with the latter on Monday seeking to corner Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren's silence over the derogatory remarks allegedly hurled against his sister-in-law by his ally, Ansari.
The issue also seems to be broadly in accord with BJP's aggressive campaign pitch against the change of demography of Jamtara and the adjoining areas in Santhal Pargana and the threat allegedly facing the women and the tribal identity and culture because of arrival of illegal Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh.
The party has attacked Soren government and its coalition partner, Congress, of indulging the " influx" because of the vote bank considerations.
The issue has been raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah during their visits to Jharkhand ,
On Sunday, Sita Soren turned emotional while raising the issue at a press conference in Ranchi
“Ansari has been targeting me since my candidacy was announced. His remarks are unacceptable and an insult to women in the tribal community. The community will never forgive him,” she said before breaking down .
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has taken notice of the remarks and asked for a report from the Jharkhand govt within three days.
