EKTA NAGAR(Narmada): Ahead of the Maharashtra elections , PM Modi Thursday made a fervent pitch for national unity and a uniform civil code , even as he criticised his opponents, saying people need to be vigilant of a 'new model of urban Naxals ' whose sole agenda is to foment anarchy and destabilise the country.

Addressing the nation on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, Sardar Patel's birth anniversary, at the Statue of Unity, Modi also said internal and external forces are trying to tarnish India's image by resorting to a slanderous campaign, seeing the country's growing global reputation.

And days after UP CM Yogi Adityanath remarked "batenge toh katenge" (if divided, we perish), which was endorsed by RSS, Modi said "urban Naxal groups ... twist the sentiment of 'Ek Hai To Safe Hai' into something negative".

'Forces, within India & outside, trying to foment anarchy'

Discriminatory approach in policies of previous govts weakened the country’s unity, PM Narendra Modi said on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, without naming any political party. Since 2014, Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary has been celebrated on Oct 31 as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’, or National Unity Day.

“A new governance model has left no room for discrimination in the past 10 y ears. Today, India is also moving towards One Nation, One Civil Code, meaning a secular civil code. This will help end discrimination among different social classes and help the nation progress,” he said.

However, he said the country needs to be vigilant about divisive forces who are trying to create schisms in society on grounds of caste and threaten the country’s unity.

Modi said some with a perverted mentality, and certain powers, are troubled see ing India’s growing strength, and are working to harm the country’s economic interests. “They want to send a negative message to investors worldwide. They are even targeting India’s military through misinformation campaigns and trying to create a division within the armed forces,” he added. “Both, within India and outside, there are forces who are trying to foment instability and anarchy in India,” the PM said.

Paying tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji, he said that the Raigadh Fort has been the sacred land of social justice, patriotism, and the values of putting the nation first. “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj united the different thoughts of the nation for a single purpose from the fort of Raigadh. Today, here in the Unity City, the image of that historic fort of Raigadh stands before us as a symbol of inspiration,” he said.
