Chanel CEO Leena Nair challenged ChatGPT to visualise her company's leadership team during a Microsoft headquarters visit, only to watch the AI system generate images of men in suits – completely missing the reality of her female-led luxury brand .
The AI's gender-biased response exposed a glaring disconnect, given that women make up 76% of Chanel's workforce and Nair herself stands as only the second female CEO in the company's 114-year history. "It was a 100% male team, not even in fashionable clothes," Nair said during a Stanford Business School interview. "Like, come on. This is what you've got to offer?"
OpenAI acknowledged the concerns, stating they are "continuously iterating on our models to reduce bias and mitigate harmful outputs." A subsequent test by Fortune magazine showed improvement, with ChatGPT generating images including both men and women.
Since becoming Chanel's second female CEO in 2021, Nair has increased female managers from 38% to about 60%.
Nair emphasised the necessity of addressing AI biases while embracing technological advancement.
"AI is everywhere, yes, and it's going to be transformative in our world, so luxury has to engage with it," Nair said. "It's so important that we keep the ethics and integrity of what we're doing. I constantly talk to my friends in tech, all the CEOs, saying, 'Come on, guys, you gotta make sure that you're integrating a humanistic way of thinking in AI.'"
