Apple iPhone 17 series base models may get this Pro-exclusive display feature

Apple is reportedly planning to equip the entire iPhone 17 lineup series with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) displays, says a report by South Korea's ETNews. LTPO is a low-power backplane technology for OLED displays that allows for a variable refresh rate with reduced power consumption. This means that base models of the upcoming series will feature ProMotion displays with a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

The new report aligns with the previous report by supply chain analyst Ross Young who said that iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will likely support ProMotion. ProMotion display has so far been limited to the Pro iPhone models since the launch of iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021.

As per the report, Samsung and LG will supply the LPTO display for the iPhone 17 series. “Samsung Display and LG Display are currently supplying panels to Apple. On the other hand, Chinese display companies have no history of supplying LTPO to Apple, so it is highly likely that Korean display companies will monopolize the entire iPhone 17 series volume next year,” the report said.

Apple is expected to introduce an ‘Air’ model, replacing the current Plus variant. The series is said to offer four phones – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and all-new iPhone 17 Air. With this display feature, iPhone 17 and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air are likely to have smoother-looking video content and scrolling experience.
