NEW DELHI: With just minutes to go for the close of play, Virat Kohli had a huge lapse in judgement as it resulted in an unfortunate run-out on the opening day of the third and final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai on Friday.
Going for a non-existent run, Kohli paid the price for the mistake with his wicket as India found themselves in a mess at 86 for four at stumps, still 149 adrift of Kiwis first innings score of 235 all out.
The incident took place on the third ball of the final over when, Kohli looking to steal a single, pushed a flighted Rachin Ravindra delivery to mid-on. Soon after hitting it, Kohli took off but Matt Henry was quick to react and threw the ball down at the stumps after swiftly collecting it.
Seeing the incoming throw, Kohli put in a big dive but as Henry had hit the bull's eye, the star India batter was found at least a couple of yards short.
Before the fall of Kohli in the final over, the penultimate over of the day saw India losing Yashasvi Jaiswal and nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj falling of successive balls against Ajaz Patel.
While Jaiswal (30) was knocked over around his legs, Siraj was trapped plumb in front of the stumps for a golden duck.
Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar shared 9 wickets between them as the hosts bundled out the Kiwis for 235.
Daryl Mitchell (82) was the top scorer for the BlackCaps.
New Zealand already have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series.
