Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull 's prediction in 2018 about Shubman Gill ’s cricket career outlasting Prithvi Shaw ’s has come true, at least as of this moment. Gill scored 90 runs in India's first innings against New Zealand in the ongoing third Test at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Both players were part of India's U19 team that won the World Cup in 2018, with Shaw as captain and Gill as vice-captain. Shaw scored a century on his Test debut against West Indies in Rajkot the same year, while Gill took longer to break into the Test team. Now, Gill is performing well across all formats for India.

Doull had noted during the U19 World Cup in New Zealand that while there was much talk about Shaw, Gill seemed technically more solid.

“I made quite a bold statement that Shubman Gill's career would way, way surpass what Prithvi Shaw does because there was some technical flaws in Prithvi Shaw and Shubman just didn't look like he had technical flaws at that stage,” Doull commented on JioCinema.

In 2024, Gill has surpassed the 800-run mark in Tests, while Shaw has been excluded from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad due to form and fitness issues. Highlighting Gill’s adaptability, Doull emphasised, “The impressive thing about him for me is that he's able to change things, he's able to take in information and process that.”

Doull acknowledged Gill’s ambition for high scores, saying, "When I interviewed him he was like I want big runs. I want big hundreds and that's the hunger of the man." He also praised the future potential of players like Jaiswal, Gill, and Pant for Indian cricket, concluding, "When you think about Jaiswal Gill and Pant, they are the future of the batting of this side."
