Matthew Short shows inclination to lead Australia against Pakistan

Send Push
Matthew Short will be part of Australia 's leadership group during the Twenty20 series against Pakistan . He may also serve as captain while Mitchell Marsh is on paternity leave.

With less than 20 white-ball internationals under his belt, the 28-year-old was the captain of the Adelaide Strikers in the last Big Bash League season. Without any Test regulars in the T20 squad, Short is one of the candidates for captaincy along with Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and Josh Inglis.

Short expressed his interest in the role. "I’ve done it for a little bit now with the Adelaide Strikers and really enjoyed being involved in making some of the calls," he said. "The communication (from selectors) at the moment is ... they still haven’t made up their mind, but if it was me they wanted, I’d definitely put my hand up for it."

David Warner's retirement has created an opportunity for Short to secure his place at the top of the order. He topped the BBL's batting charts with 541 runs from 11 matches and received his second Player of the Tournament award.

Short is in competition with Jake Fraser-McGurk, who impressed in the Indian Premier League and scored his first international fifty against England in September.

Short and Fraser-McGurk will compete for the opening position when Australia plays Pakistan in the first of three ODIs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday. The T20 series begins in Brisbane on November 14.

Facing Pakistan's bowlers coached by Jason Gillespie, Short acknowledged Gillespie's influence. "He's seen plenty of me batting in the nets and in games and I'm sure he's going to hand that onto some of their bowlers," he said. "We'll see how we go."
