Send Push
In a strategic roster move ahead of the 2025–26 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced the claims of goaltender Cayden Primeau and forward Sammy Blais off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. These new additions are set to bolster the team's depth in goal and bring some much-needed grit to the front lines as they finalize their lineup for opening night. It is important to note that Primeau was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Canadiens in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick on June 30. Meanwhile, Blais joined the Canadiens in the off-season on a one-year, $775,000 deal.

Maple Leafs claim goaltender Cayden Primeau and forward Sammy Blais

The Toronto Maple Leafs have added to their team, goaltender Cayden Primeau from the Carolina Hurricanes and forward Sammy Blais from the Montreal Canadiens, the club announced on Monday. The moves bolster Toronto’s depth ahead of the 2025–26 NHL season, giving the team added insurance both in goal and up front.

Primeau is making his way to the Maple Leafs after being waived by the Hurricanes, who had just picked him up from the Montreal Canadiens during the offseason. The American goaltender has signed a one-year contract worth $775,000, bringing with him a blend of NHL experience and AHL success.

Last season, he played 11 games with Montreal, finishing with a 2–3–1 record, an .836 save percentage, and a 3.82 goals-against average. But his time in the AHL with the Laval Rocket was much more impressive; he boasted a 21–2–2 record, a 1.96 GAA, and a .927 save percentage, which earned him a share of the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award for allowing the fewest goals in the league.

In his 55 NHL appearances, Primeau has a record of 13–24–7 and an .884 save percentage. The Toronto team plans to use him as a depth option behind Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby, especially since Joseph Woll is currently on personal leave. Primeau’s arrival also raises some questions about veteran James Reimer, who has been with the team on a professional tryout agreement.

Maple Leafs cap implications and roster outlook
Toronto's waiver claims involve some clever salary cap strategies. As reported by PuckPedia , the Leafs are currently about $21,221 below the cap after temporarily sending Hildeby to the AHL. This means that they might need to make further roster tweaks as they finalize their 23-man lineup ahead of Opening Night.

Both Primeau and Blais are set to join the Maple Leafs' main group right away. It will be interesting to watch how the goaltending situation will unfold in the next few weeks as Primeau joins, while Blais will be looking to lock down a full-time position in Berube's bottom six.
