Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Date, Time, Puja Rituals and Significance of Choti Diwali

Narak Chaturdashi is the second day of Diwali, and celebrated as Choti Diwali also. This day holds an immense religious and spiritual significance among Hindus. This day falls a day before Laxmi Puja and people celebrate this day also with great enthusiasm and fervor. On this auspicious day, people light diyas and worship various Gods and Goddess. Narak Chaturdashi occurs on Chaturdashi Tithi or 14th day of lunar month, during Krishna Paksha of Kartik month as per Hindu Calendar. This year, Narak Chaturdashi is being celebrated today, on October 30, 2024.

Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Significance


Narak Chaturdashi holds a great religious significance in Hindu religion and this is the second of Diwali celebration. This day is also celebrated as Choti Diwali across the country and people celebrate this day with great pomp and show. There is as famous story associated with this festival and that is related to Lord Krishna when he killed the demon named Narkasura and that's the reason why this festival is celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi.

Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Story

As per Hindu Scriptures, it is believed that once there was a demon named Narakasura and he was torturing people on earth. He captured 16000 girls and was unable to bear the torture so they all prayed to Lord Krishna to help them and kill the demon. Lord Krishna went to rescue all the girls along with his wife Satyabhama and saved them all by killing that demon. He was actually killed by Satyabhama who was his mother in previous birth and Narakasura got a boon from Lord Brahma that he could only be killed by his mother. After killing the demon, all girls requested Lord Krishna to accept them as his wife as nobody would accept them as they have been abducted by Narkasura. So, Lord Krishna accepted their request and became their husband.

Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Puja Rituals

Devotees wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath then clean up their house and puja room. They again decorate the house by making rangoli at the entrance door. Decorate their house by putting lights, diyas, flowers and creative decorative material. This day is considered an auspicious to worship Lord Krishna. You can light a diya with desi ghee and offer him sweets such as kheer, halwa and dry fruits. Seek divine blessings of Lord Krishna. One must light 11 and 14 earthen lamps in your home as it brings positivity and good fortune.
