NEW DELHI: Mahela Jayawardene has disclosed the decision-making process behind Rohit Sharma being finalised as Mumbai Indians ’ fourth retention for IPL 2025 .

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have secured their core for IPL 2025, retaining the quartet of Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah , Suryakumar Yadav , and Hardik Pandya , alongside promising talent Tilak Varma .

MI endured a challenging last season, ending at the bottom of the 10-team league. They will enter the upcoming auction with a substantial purse of Rs 45 crore, looking to strengthen their squad for a comeback.

According to Jayawardene, the team’s senior quartet β€” Rohit, Bumrah, Hardik, and Suryakumar β€” played an active role in discussions surrounding captaincy and retention decisions for the IPL 2025 season.

"We had extensive discussions. These four senior guys led those discussions. Obviously, what happened last season, as well as how we collectively move forward, was crucial for us to align in that right direction," Jayawardene told Jio Cinema.

"So coaching staff, owners, management and these four guys the direction came from them, what needs to be done, how it needs to go about."

Mumbai Indians have allocated the top retention price of Rs 18 crore to pace spearhead Bumrah, while Suryakumar and Hardik have both been retained at Rs 16.35 crore.

Jayawardene revealed that Rohit, retained for Rs 16.30 crore, agreed to be MI's fourth pick after stepping away from T20Is after leading India to the T20 World Cup glory in June. Youngster Tilak, retained at Rs 8 crore, was the final selection for the former champions.

"And obviously Ro (hit) led the retention part, and everyone agreed that Booms (Bumrah), you know, being the best sport in the world, and it's been very consistent, and we need to recognise that at the top.

"And then he wanted the other young Indians to be recognised, and it was his call. So all in all, it was brilliant to see that you know them leading that conversation and agreeing to everything. So it was quite easy for us."
