Anand Mahindra , the chairman of the Mahindra Group , isn’t just known for having one of India’s important business conglomerates under his leadership but also for being a social media icon. His motivational posts, witty one-liners, or quirky takes on current affairs oftenly go viral online.

His X(Twitter) feed is a quirky mix of business related info, national pride, clever humor, and support for innovation. Over the years, he has built an image for engaging with his audience in a relatable and forward-thinking manner that is appreciated by them.

Unlike the traditional image of industrialists being reserved or distant, Mahindra uses his social media to share entrepreneurial stories, interesting ideas, and sometimes even take a jibe at real-world situations. His posts get a lot of appreciation not just from industry peers, but also from common users across the country.

This time Anand Mahindra has proposed the creation of a Shenzhen -style city in India with a bold vision for boosting India’s tech and industrial capabilities. “It’s time for a Shenzhen equivalent city in India…,” Mahindra wrote on X, which got a flurry of reactions online.

What is Shenzhen?

Shenzhen is a modern metropolis in China’s Guangdong province that has grown into a global tech and manufacturing hub, and is also called China’s Silicon Valley. The city’s massive GDP, rapid urban development, and strong standing as a go-to destination for tech innovation and manufacturing worldwide.

Mahindra’s post once again went viral among the users who flooded the thread with suggestions for Indian cities that could be a choice for a tech city. One user wrote, “Noida is the right choice to be pushed as a Shenzhen equivalent for India. It has everything available from a vast electronics manufacturing system to components ecosystem to semiconductor research presence.”

Another user suggested, “I think Machilipatnam in AP has the similarities of Shenzhen, China. It's on the east coast, in the middle of the country, next to Amaravathi, vast human resources who want to transform from agri to other sectors, ready to switch.”

A third user said, “A Shenzhen-like city in India is indeed overdue. Bengaluru, with its tech ecosystem and companies like Infosys, is a strong contender, but to rival Shenzhen’s $450B GDP, we need more: robust Special Economic Zones, improved infrastructure, and a stronger focus on STEM education. Dholera SIR, with its strategic planning since 2009, could also be a game-changer if execution accelerates.”

Another user added, “Pune can be India’s Shenzhen! With its thriving IT hubs like Hinjewadi, skilled talent pool, and solid infra, Pune’s ready to lead as a tech-manufacturing hub.”

This comes amid…
Interestingly, Mahindra’s statement came just two days after Shenzhen was in the global spotlight again, this time for hosting the Billie Jean King Cup finals, which were preponed to September by the International Tennis Federation to align with the WTA Asian swing, as reported by The Hindu.
