Television actors often miss family gatherings on special occasions due to demanding shoot schedules. However, Madalsa Sharma, who was part of Anupamaa for four years until she quit the daily soap a few months ago, made it a priority to spend festivals with her family — especially Diwali, her favourite. She shares, “Even with my busy schedule over the past few years, I would always inform the production house in advance about the time off I needed to spend quality time with my family on Diwali. My personal life is far more important than my professional one, so I make it a point to be fully involved with my loved ones for the festival of lights.”
She participates in all the Diwali preparations, from cleaning the house to decorating and cooking, though shopping is her favourite. She laughs, “Shopping is one thing I can’t miss — it’s my favourite part of Diwali prep!”
Diwali is also a cherished time for her because it brings her two families together. The daughter of veteran actress Sheela Sharma and married to Mimoh, son of Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty, she says, “This festival is truly special because it unites both my families. We feel such positivity as we perform Lakshmi pooja at home. It’s a beautiful gathering with diyas and phooljhadis. We avoid crackers since they harm the environment and disturb stray animals. Celebrating Diwali in a quiet, eco-friendly way is a message I hope people embrace.”

Ask her if she notices any difference between celebrating Diwali at her in-laws’ home and her maternal one, and she replies, “We’re all true Mumbaiites, so whether it’s my family or my in-laws, the traditions remain the same. Diwali feels as joyful and nostalgic now as it did when I was a child, from waking up early to wishing everyone to our evening party with sweets, ice cream, cakes, and pastries. That’s the magic of Diwali for me — it brings back all those wonderful memories.”
