Nagpur: The dedicated hemophilia centre at Daga Hospital is delivering specialised healthcare to 560 registered patients suffering from this rare blood disorder. Civil surgeon Dr Nivrutti Rathod said patients with Hemophilia A and B are receiving costly Factor VIII and IX (blood clotting components) completely free of charge, along with a range of essential healthcare services to manage their condition.
"The centre is equipped with diagnostic facilities for hemophilia screening, a physiotherapy unit, and a counselling centre. We also supply clotting factors to critically ill hemophilia patients admitted to government hospitals, at no cost. So far, more than 50 lives have been saved through this initiative," Dr Rathod said, on the eve of World Hemophilia Day, which is observed on April 17 each year. This year's theme — "Access for All: Women and Girls Bleed Too", which highlights the need for better diagnosis and treatment for women and girls with bleeding disorders.
Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh, who heads the Daga Hospital hemophilia centre, said hemophilia is a genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of clotting factors VIII or IX. This deficiency leads to frequent internal bleeding, especially in joints, which can result in long-term deformities and disability.
"Clotting factors are administered either on demand during bleeding episodes or as a preventive measure at least twice a week," he added.
Daga medical superintendent Dr Dilip Madhavi said factor VIII, IX, and inhibitor injections are extremely expensive and beyond the reach of many families."We are proud to provide them free of cost to all patients at our centre," he said.
Patients at the centre expressed gratitude, sharing how access to free treatment has transformed their lives. Dr. Deshmukh also acknowledged the dedicated efforts of his team — Sandeep Poratkar, Dr. Sneha, Leena, Pratidnya, and Rohit Jaiswal — for their unwavering commitment to patient care.
