One of the most important Hindu festivals, Diwali, is here. Diwali, also called the festival of lights , is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy by Hindus across the world and in some countries/ international cities it has also been declared as a holiday! It was on this auspicious day when Lord Ram, along with Maa Sita and his brother Laxman returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. And so, it is a yearly reminder of the victory of good over evil. This year, there's a slight confusion as to which day will Diwali be celebrated as per the Hindu calendar. However, the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has shared with India Today that it is on October 31, 2024, putting all confusions to rest.

Diwali celebrations are spread over five days, beginning with Dhanteras, followed by Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. For the festivities, people start cleaning and decorating their house days in advance. A significant part of Diwali decorations is making beautiful rangoli s at the entrace of the house to welcome Goddess Laxmi and seek her blessings on the festival night. Of course, it is also made to welcome guests and beautify the house. For the unversed, rangoli is a beautiful pattern or drawing made on the floor at the house's entrace and it is usually filled with colourful sands (also called rangoli colours) or flowers and petals. These days, some people also make rangoli by placing ready-made rangoli patterns on the floor. However, rangolis are incomplete until a diya is placed either on or near it.
