Dispur: A video was widely shared on social media, in which Assam police were allegedly seen dragging two bodies of the accident victims in a plastic bag in Darrang district, Assam. The video led to massive outrage on social media. The victims were a father-daughter duo who met with an accident while riding a scooter after they collided with a stationary truck on a national highway near the Sakotla area and toppled on the road, said the police, as per the media reports. As they toppled on the road, another truck ran over them just after their collision, resulting in their deaths. The victim, Mathura Nath Deka, had picked up his daughter, Nandita, from Guwahati University. Nandita was a first-semester student, said officials. The duo were going back home in Sipajhar when the incident occurred. An eyewitness, as per the TOI report, said, "Another truck ran over them before bystanders could render any assistance to the father and daughter." The bystanders informed cops, and subsequently, a police team arrived. The cops wrapped the bodies with polythene sheets and ropes and allegedly "dragged" them to a vehicle instead of using a stretcher towards a vehicle for post-mortem. The video led to widespread condemnation, with users calling the act "inhumane and insensitive." However, the Director General of Police (DGP) on X said, "An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the circumstances of the said incident."The police officers, however, refuted the claims and said, "The bodies were severely crushed. The remains were collected and secured using a polythene sheet. The bodies weren’t dragged but carefully transferred to the vehicle given the challenging circumstances" reported TOI.
