Dr Ross Perry at Cosmedics skin clinics has revealed the two ingredients everybody needs in their regime as they get older. "Most other products have minimal or very little benefit," cautioned Dr Perry, adding that they could "irritate the skin".
One ingredient people are advised to add to their routines from the age of 30 is vitamin C serum. This helps combat the early signs of , such as fine lines and wrinkles. is the other cosmetic ingredient that could help to "turn back the clock."
"We do not want to be stripping our skin every day by using harsh ingredients as the skin is there for a barrier purpose," said Dr Perry.
However a "good moisturising cream", vitamin C serum in the mornings and retinol at night "will be worthwhile", as well as SPF.
When it comes to selecting a good moisturising cream, Dr Perry pointed out that "everybody's skin is individual".
Dr Perry continued: "And, as such, it can often be a case of trial and error to find creams that will suit your particular skin type."
He did caution, however, that "spending more than 40 or 50 pounds on any particular cream is completely hope in a jar".
Dr Perry stated: "It won't do anything more than any of the cheaper creams."
As for SPF, Dr Perry said, "A factor of 30 is fine for everyday use," but if you're outside playing sports or on summer holidays, then an SPF 50 is recommended.
Dr Perry added: "Also, be mindful that SPFs wear out after two hours, despite what they say."
This is why it's strongly recommended to reapply SPF throughout the day - particularly if you're sweating.
In addition to products, the "ultimate skincare for your skin is to have a healthy diet and exercise".
Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can lead to "a healthier glow" on the skin, and exercise will also help to keep your skin in good condition.
Dr Perry said: "Avoid excessive things such as sugar, alcohol and smoking; those simple factors alone will make a massive difference to your skin."
