boss was a team-mate of Red Devils defender Victor Lindelof during his time as a player with Benfica. Amorim featured 153 times for the Portuguese outfit during his playing career, with the latter part of that spell coinciding with part of Lindelof's stint in Portugal.
The two men will be able to reacquaint themselves at Old Trafford in the weeks and months ahead.
Amorim was appointed Red Devils manager earlier this week following a successful four-and-half year spell in charge of Sporting.
Amorim spent nine years as a Benfica player after joining the club from Belenenses in 2008. The former midfielder helped the side win three Portuguese league titles and also featured regularly in the Champions League and Europa League.
He embarked on an 18-month loan spell with Braga at the start of 2012 before spending a year on loan in Qatar with Al-Wakrah during the 2015/16 campaign.
Lindelof, meanwhile, joined Benfica from Swedish outfit Vasteras in 2012 but had to bide his time in the B team before breaking into the main side. By the time he had become a first team regular, Amorim was plying his trade in the Middle East. The United boss did return to Benfica but ultimately called time on his career in 2017.
Lindelof made 73 appearances for Benfica before joining United in 2017 when Jose Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford and has gone on to feature more than 250 times for the 13-time Premier League champions.
But his career in Manchester has been hampered by a string of injury issues and he missed the start of the current season after hurting his toe in pre-season.
The 30-year-old made his first appearance of the current campaign as a half time substitute during his side's in early October and came off the bench during the recent clashes with Brentford and West Ham. And he will now be hoping to force his way into Amorim's thinking.
Ahead of this weekend's round of fixtures, United found themselves 14th in the Premier League table after winning just three of their first nine matches and accumulating 11 points.
Following their clash with Chelsea, the Red Devils will host PAOK Salonika in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
And Amorim's third match in charge will also come at Old Trafford, with Leicester scheduled to visit for another Premier League encounter next Sunday.
