Los Angeles witnessed scenes of anarchy following the LA Dodgers' emphatic World Series victory over the Yankees, as police pleaded with the public to steer clear of turmoil involving looting and rampant arson.

Cheers morphed into mayhem after the LA Dodgers clinched their second World Series title in five years, sparking jubilant but unruly street celebrations that featured fireworks illuminating the Los Angeles night sky.

The jubilation rapidly degenerated into bedlam in parts of the metropolis, prompting officers decked in riot gear to move swiftly to curb outbreaks of disorder. The LAPD reported assaults on law enforcement and quickly circulated photos on social media portraying incidents of theft and deliberate fire setting.

Footage surfaced on X (formerly known as Twitter) showing a public bus ablaze while spectators recorded the fiery spectacle. The area was cordoned off by police who barred all access.

In a post on X, the LAPD alarmed residents: "Various projectiles are being thrown at LAPD Officers in the area of Olympic and Grand. Extra resources are responding to that area to assist. If you are on the street, at or adjacent to that intersection, leave the area immediately and follow officers orders."

The LAPD went on to warn in a subsequent tweet: "We have reports of looting at several stores in the area of 8th and Broadway. Please stay out of the area."

A crowd gathered at 9th and Grand in Downtown LA, prompting police to issue a dispersal order for an unlawful assembly. Authorities stated that an unlawful assembly had formed, with individuals hurling fireworks and projectiles at officers, resulting in a dispersal order being issued.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass commended the Dodgers on their win, but firmly emphasised that violence would not be condoned. Following the victory, she posted: "As we celebrate this achievement tonight and in the coming days, violence will not be tolerated.

"LAPD is currently on tactical alert and has activated a strategic plan to protect communities and businesses, which includes proactive deployment and a coordinated strategy with regional partners to ensure that all Angelenos are able to celebrate safely."

In contrast, numerous fans congregated to celebrate the Dodgers' triumph, with many spotted waving team flags and cheering. Vice President and Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris took to social media to express her congratulations.

Ms Harris, a California native, posted: "Congratulations to the 2024 World Series champions, the Los Angeles @Dodgers. Your dominant play this season brought joy to millions of fans around the world - including @SecondGentleman."
