The most expensive area of the UK for car insurance has been unveiled, with drivers paying over £1,000 for cover in one region. However, surprisingly, London has not come out on top with road users in Yorkshire and The Humber actually paying the highest bills in the entire country.
The research from Compare the Market recealed drivers living in the region were paying an average of £1,221 for cover, down £361 on costs recorded just 12 months earlier. The bills were still higher than motorists pay in London where average insurance fees have been recorded at £1,035 per year. This total was also down on figures from 2024 where prices were found to be £232 more expensive.
Amy Rootham, an expert at Compare the Market, stressed insurance prices were falling with road users now able to secure "cheaper deals".
She told the Daily Express: "Many motorists will be delighted that the cost of car insurance is continuing to fall.
"Drivers should look to take advantage of this by shopping around for a cheaper deal when their policy ends. Choosing to auto-renew a policy may lead to motorists missing out on substantial savings."
Greater London was the third-highest region for car insurance costs, with road users paying £947 per year. These costs were also down, with prices dropping £286 on the £1,233 per year charged to road users in August 2024.
West Midlands was next, with drivers charged £717 per annum, followed by North West (£663) and Northern Ireland (£622). The South West was the cheapest region in the UK to secure car insurance policies, with drivers paying just £463 per year to stay on the roads.
This comes after another discount on last year, with average costs dropping £91 from the £554 per annum in 2024.
