Donald Trump appeared to "short-circuit" live on Fox News as the channel was paused for a breaking alert this weekend. The US president was live at the regular-season NFL game between the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders on Sunday (November 9) and read aloud an oath for members of the military to recite as part of a ceremony.
But Trump was met with loud boos and jeers from the crowd as he started to speak, arriving late to the game on Air Force One after a flyover of the Northwest Stadium. He told attendees: "We're gonna have a good game. Things are going along very well. The country's doing well. The Democrats have to open it up."
As he read out the military address, Trump appeared to forget to change the "state your name" section with his own name, instead reading aloud his instructions. There was, however, a rational explanation.
He said: "I, then state your name, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies..." The president paused in between the words as the boos around him got louder.
Viewers went wild over the on-screen moment, with one writing on X: "What's even funnier that people are missing is he actually says, 'I, THEN state your name'. Which means someone put it in the document specifically for Trump to remember to state his name, the THEN part is so telling and he still reads it out!"'
Another said: "Trump got booed so hard at the Commanders game he literally said, 'I, state your name...' during the pledge. Man short-circuited mid-sentence. The boos broke him."
While a third echoed: "The moment he realises how loud they're booing him, he stopped and dropped his jaw a little.... That's the moment he was humiliated."
However, someone else gave Trump the benefit of the doubt, arguing: "He was swearing in military not taking the oath himself. It wasn't the pledge. Not sure why at a football game, maybe for performance to his base. Read its for Veterans Day also could be USMC birthday. Who knows why he does what he does but it didn't go over well."
Another said: "He is a loathsome & despicable human being & president. But HE was NOT being sworn in. He was swearing in others. He read it correctly. There are so many legit offence he has committed; this isn't one of them and it makes the left look ill-informed to claim otherwise."
