For fans of period drama, there's a hidden gem now streaming free that some viewers are calling a "masterpiece" and even "better than All Creatures Great and Small." The Hardacres, adapted from CL Skelton's novels, has been quietly winning admirers with its mix of family drama, social climbing, and Yorkshire grit. Set in the 1890s, the series charts the fortunes of the Hardacre family, who begin as dock workers in a tough northern town before striking it rich and attempting to join the ranks of the landed gentry.
But while they may have money, what they lack is acceptance - something that proves harder to buy. At the centre is Mary Hardacre, who longs for recognition from the established county set but quickly learns that old money looks down on new. Her husband Sam, more practical, sees wealth as an opportunity to support their former workmates rather than chase status.

This push and pull between aspiration and loyalty, pride and prejudice runs through every episode, creating an epic and intimate drama.
The setting, too, is key: from the bustle of the fish docks to the sweeping grounds of a country estate, the contrasts feel sharp.
On IMDb, viewers have been quick to praise both the story and performances. One review called it "entertaining, well acted and very well made," adding: "The characters were believable and you find yourself rooting for justice... Sam Hardacre is more down to earth and wants to use his wealth to help his former work colleagues. Well worth a watch and I recommend this to any who like period dramas."
Another reviewer compared the series to the works of Catherine Cookson, writing: "Wonderful period piece with layered characters and an interesting storyline... Showcases hardship as well as good fortune but ultimately, the triumph of family values and strong friendships."
A third declared it "the best show on TV for a long time," praising the cast and urging for a second season: "A true crowd pleaser with everything you need in a good drama. Highs, lows, laughter and tears... I want more of this with the same cast and more great storylines from the Hardacre family."
The first season of The Hardacres, released in 2024, is available to watch on Channel 5 and Apple TV.
