There is an extremely popular BBC drama for you to sink your teeth into, and it is streaming free of charge. River is a six-part British television drama series, created and written by Abi Morgan and starring Stellan Skarsgård and Nicola Walker. It first aired on BBC in 2015 and internationally on Netflix later that year. The series follows Detective Inspector John River who is suffering from guilt over a recent loss.

The series synopsis reads: "Stellan Skarsgård stars as John River, a brilliant police officer whose genius and fault line is the fragility of his mind. He is a man haunted by the murder victims whose secrets he must unlock, a man who walks a professional tightrope between a pathology so extreme he risks permanent dismissal, and a healthy state of mind that could cure him of his gift. Created and written by Emmy and BAFTA winning screenwriter Abi Morgan, this enthralling thriller pushes viewers' expectations of crime drama in bold and unexpected ways."

With a perfect 100% rating from the critics of Rotten Tomatoes, the series has proved extremely popular. The critics consensus states: "River is a richly rewarding mystery that finds Stellan Skarsgård at the peak of his powers, ably rising to the nuances of Abi Morgan's pathos-laden teleplay."

River has been described as a "masterpiece" by fans, with one adding that it is "the best TV show EVER".

Another viewer proclaimed: "River, the british series from 2015, is the very best there is - others may reach the same standard, though very few, but none can surpass this brilliantly crafted and performed limited series. Stellan Skarsgård and Nicola Walker demonstrate a chemistry that is unmatched - and the entire supporting cast is equally powerful. I've watched and rewatched many times and have yet to find it repetitious."

"Stellan Skarsgård is masterful as John River. The story is wonderfully written and brilliantly told. Skarsgård's has been involved in 2 of the finest limited series I've ever seen, this one and Chernobyl....I'm guessing that's not a co-incidence," added a fourth fan.

River is available to stream on Netflix and also free of charge on ITVX.
