Colleen Hoover books are like marmite. They're easy to read, enticing, and quite frankly, good fun. But for a lot of people they're a bit too easy, so it's not for everyone.
I, however, am partial to them, but admittedly, I hadn't actually read Regretting You until I saw the trailer drop. As soon as I did see the trailer, I knew that I wanted to see the film, but even more so, I knew that I wanted to read the book.
So that's what I did, it was a classic 24-hour book, I was able to read it quickly and move on. My favourite kind. My mouth was gaping at parts, I was getting emotional at others. Honestly, I'm glad that this was able to happen before I went to the cinema to see it, otherwise I would have been a mess.
Since its release, the book has been branded a "masterpiece", "outstanding", and by many, the "best Colleen Hoover book", but did it live up to its potential on screen?
I headed to my local Odeon Cinema to get set up and watch Regretting You, and I was incredibly excited about it. I was quite disappointed with It Ends With Us, alongside many others, so as the second Colleen Hoover film adaptation, I was hopeful, but I didn't have high expectations.
However, it did still knock it out of the park. The book starts with the most devastating secret being uncovered about Morgan's husband and sister, and it was shared so beautifully on screen. You could sense her pain, while seeing how much she was desperately trying to cling onto her strength for her daughter Clara.
The book followed the two different perspectives from Morgan and Clara, and I think that was shared beautifully on screen, the viewer was always aware of what was going on behind closed doors, even when Clara was none the wiser. It's heartbreaking to watch Clara not understand her mum's struggles, and Jonah coming back after leaving for a few days was just... perfect and gut-wrenching all in one go.
One thing I loved about the film was that it did cut out some of the things in the book that for me, were cringey, such as the "mockumentary" at the end. It still stayed somewhat true to the book, but it just wasn't quite as over the top as it was in the book, thankfully.
However, with every good film, comes some kind of downside (most of the time), and my downside is with the movie poster, honestly. In my opinion, Clara is not the main character of this film, but the poster really is suggestive like Clara and Miller are the big love story. They are two teens following their first love, it's cute, but it's not everything.
Morgan and Jonah are far more of a love story than Clara and Miller, they have history, shared trauma, adult feelings. Meanwhile, Clara is a teenager who at one point, uses Miller as a pawn to make her mum angry. They shouldn't be at the centre of the poster while Morgan and Jonah are placed at the side, it's a big production error, in my opinion.
