A brand new Wetherspoons pub is set to open in just a few weeks in one of London's most iconic and historic locations. The Sun Wharf will welcome its first customers on Tuesday, September 16, at 48-50 Tooley Street, ideally located right next to the entrance of London Bridge Station. But this isn't just any ordinary pub location.
The building's distinctive brick arches have a fascinating past. For nearly 40 years, until 2013, this very spot was home to the famous London Dungeon attraction.
According to Wetherspoons, these arches were once occupied by importers and provision agents who depended on the bustling warehouses across the street for their livelihoods.
While some historic sites like Hay's Wharf, now transformed into Hay's Galleria, have survived, Fenning's Wharf and Sun Wharf were replaced in 1984-85 by the massive No.1 London Bridge development.
During redevelopment of this site, a remarkable discovery was made. A Bronze Age burial mound was unearthed, adding another layer of history and significance to the spot.
Images of the interior shared by Wetherspoons reveal portraits hanging on the walls, exposed brickwork showcasing the historic arches, and a distinctive swirled carpet that adds a modern touch while complementing the venue's visible past.

Sipping a pint at The Sun Wharf will offer patrons not just refreshment, but a tangible connection to London's fascinating past.
The London Dungeon itself dates back to 1974, originally opening in Tooley Street near London Bridge.
It was a smaller, more traditional wax museum-style attraction focusing on London's dark history and figures like Boudica, who was a queen of the ancient British Iceni tribe.
It has changed quite a bit over the years, moving to its current location on the South Bank, near the London Eye, in 2013 and transforming into a highly interactive, theatrical experience with live actors, rides, and special effects.
