With high summer upon us, it's time to give your grass some extra care before the sun has a chance to burn it to a crisp. If your pride and joy is a lush lawn, you'll want it to look its best for the sunny season and you won't want unsightly yellow patches blighting your green oasis come March.
Turf specialists have revealed their secret potions for a lush, emerald-green lawn all summer long. One gardening expert said using lawn sand could prevent your grass from becoming yellow. In a YouTube video, noted that yellow grass is common in winter due to diminished sunlight, impacting the grass's energy storage. He pointed out that the grass could be lacking iron but claimed that applying lawn sand could address these problems. Lawn sand, with its potent mix of ferrous sulphate (sulphate enriched with iron), ammonia sulphate, and sand, offers multiple benefits. Ferrous sulphate, the primary ingredient, not only imparts green hues to your turf but fends off moss too.
Nonetheless, the expert cautioned to apply it carefully, as it can stain anything but your intended lawn. Lawn sand is readily available from any garden centre or even Amazon. A 10kg bag of lawn sand from Amazon, priced at around £15, should suffice to treat 140 square metres of grass.
He insisted: "Now any time you fill up a spreader or you work with this stuff, always make sure that you're not on hard surfaces, paving, decking, concrete - because the iron stains everything. So if you're going to do any mixing, always do it on the lawn."
On top of bringing the green glow back to your grass, the lawn sand should also discourage earthworms from leaving unsightly holes in your neatly trimmed garden.
The expert added: "I've only put on a half dose of the Lawn Sand. The product I was using was three per cent nitrogen, and I didn't want to encourage too much growth. But I still want to have a bit of green up, and we're going to control the worms." Pennington Seed, experts in grass remedies, have revealed the watering mistakes that are stopping you lawn from looking its best.
Pennington Seed claims that yellow grass is simply a cry for a nutrient boost to rejuvenate your grass. They said: "If you're watering your grass properly, but it's pale green or yellow instead of dark green, your turf is most likely nutrient deficient. Yellow lawns generally lack key nutrients such as iron and nitrogen."
Pennington Seed recommends their own Ironite Mineral Supplement 1-0-1 concoction for a robust lawn, packed with a blend boasting 20 percent iron, 50 percent slow-release nitrogen, Advanced Soil Technology, plus friendly microbes. Nab this grass elixir for close to £17 on eBay, or opt for alternative iron-rich lawn tonics starting at a mere £10 on Amazon.
Pennington claims their product's slow-release nitrogen, is "ideal", explaining: "It leads to even grass growth, won't burn the lawn and surrounding plants, and is longer lasting, which means less frequent fertilising."
They also highlight their unique "advanced soil technology", claiming it enhances soil conditions, making it an ideal environment for lush grass growth while boosting organic activity in the soil, aiding plants to utilise nutrients more effectively.
