Gary Neville refused an invitation to join the Sky Sports pundits to cover Liverpool's potential Premier League title celebrations after Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur. The Manchester United icon was on co-commentary duties at Anfield but contributed to the pitchside build-up alongside David Jones, Jamie Redknapp and Daniel Sturridge.
Liverpool went on to thrash Spurs 5-1, confirming a 20th English title to move level with United, 12 years after Sir Alex Ferguson knocked the Reds off their perch. Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah added to Destiny Udogie's own goal as the hosts ran riot following Dominic Solanke's opener. During the joyous full-time scenes, the first time Liverpool fans have been able to celebrate a Premier League title with the players, Neville was unsurprisingly a no-show.
It's common practice for Sky Sports' co-commentators to rejoin the coverage after full-time and get involved with the post-match discussion.
But after Jones asked whether he'd join the panel if Liverpool secured the point they needed against Spurs, Neville made his intentions clear.
He responded: "No. There is no point in me coming down here again. I think the Liverpool fans probably won't let me get out of the commentary box!"
Liverpool have finally drawn level with their bitter rivals, who have suffered a decade-long decline since Sir Alex's triumphant 2013 retirement.
It's poetic that in the background of the Anfield giants' glory, United are recording their worst-ever season in Premier League history.
Ruben Amorim's side is rotting in 14th and have already confirmed their lowest league position and points tally, as well as their highest total of defeats.
During his pre-match appearance, Neville emphasised the magnitude of Liverpool's title win and offered a damning insight into how it will affect the mood at Old Trafford.
"It is a massive deal," Neville explained after describing the day as "sobering".
"When you think of the importance of a league title, the managers at Liverpool and United always talk about your bread and butter being the league.
"You could debate the most successful club when United were on 20.
'Obviously, Liverpool have more European Cups, but the painful thing to say is the debate is over for a period until United become successful again and win leagues.
"It should cause real tremors at Old Trafford. Liverpool will be the most successful club after today, and that should cause heartache and pain. It took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool, and now that will be gone."
