Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou stared down Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison during a box office interview after Thursday's Premier League defeat against Chelsea. The Aussie boss unleashed a frustrated rant about VAR after the 1-0 loss at Stamford Bridge, during which he appeared to cup his ears at Spurs fans.
Enzo Fernandez's second-half header proved to be the difference as Chelsea handed their bitter rivals their 16th league defeat of the season. Nicolas Jackson and Pape Matar Sarr saw goals disallowed after the Argentine midfielder's opener, and Postecoglou was visibly disgusted by the latter denial. After full-time, the Spurs boss aimed fire at VAR for "killing the game", describing its use as "crazy" and "madness".
"Look, it's killing the game, man. It's not the same game it used to be," a downbeat Postecoglou told Sky Sports.
"We all sat on our couches last night, watched TV [Liverpool vs Everton], and I guarantee if Jared Gilett was a VAR last night, we would have got a different outcome. So you just don't know what you're going to get.
"And you're standing around for 12 minutes... just, it's killing the game. But no one cares about that. I think everyone loves the drama, the controversy.
"I'm sure there'll be a 24-hour sort of discussion about it, and I think that's what everyone wants. They're not interested in reality. But it's just killing the spectacle of the game, you know.
"If the referee saw that, and then he needs to see that for six minutes, tell me what's clear and obvious about it, mate. Just the clean explanation.
"What's clear and obvious about last night? We all sat on our couches and saw one replay and go, 'Oh my god'.
"Tonight, we sat there, and we waited for six minutes for something that apparently the VAR official and Jared Gilett thought was clear and obvious.
"It's crazy, mate. It's madness, but we accept it. And when you accept something, I guess you have to take the fallout from it."
Sarr was adjudged to have fouled Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson before rifling an equaliser past Robert Sanchez, which saw Gilett chalk his goal off and hand him a yellow card to worsen the blow.
When Davison asked whether Postecoglou's frustration was about the delay, the 59-year-old became slightly more confrontational.
He added: "Look, Pat. You can try and force me into a corner. You are. Did you think last night was a red card [Tarkowski on Mac Allister]? Was it clear and obvious? Yes, okay.
"How many minutes did it take this referee to figure out whether it [Sarr on Jackson] was clear and obvious in your basic knowledge of human vocabulary clear and obvious?
"What does that suggest to you that on the first replay, is that clear and obvious? If you have to watch something quite a few times, is that clear and obvious?"
Tottenham supporters booed Postecoglou's decision to bring Lucas Bergvall off the pitch for Sarr before the Senegalese midfielder's goal moments later.
The Spurs boss appeared to cup his hands and wave at the away section in Stamford Bridge in an astonishing move that didn't cool down tensions between the two parties.
He then avoided the away end after the final whistle, while the players felt the brunt of angry supporters' reactions.
Postecoglou stared Davision down when the Sky Sports interviewer asked what went on in that moment before rapidly explaining the reason for the question.
After vehemently denying he did anything to bite back at the fans, Davison ended the spiky interview by insisting there was no agenda.
In his post-match press conference, Postecoglou, again, squashed the narrative that he cupped his ears in reaction to the boos.
"Jesus, mate, it's incredible how things get interpreted. We'd just scored. I just wanted to hear them cheer," he explained.
"We've been through a tough time, and I thought it was a cracking goal. I wanted them to get really excited. I felt at that point, we could potentially go on and win the game. I just felt the momentum was on our way.
"[The booing] doesn't bother me. It's not the first time they've booed my substitutions or my decisions. That's fine. They're allowed to do that, but we just scored a goal. I was just hoping that we could get some excitement."
