Afghanistan Earthquake: An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit south-eastern Afghanistan. The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Afghanistan four days ago has risen to 1,457, while more than 3,394 people are injured.
Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Afghanistan once again. The German Research Center for Geosciences ( GFZ) said that on Thursday (September 4, 2025) an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred in south-eastern Afghanistan . The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers. People in Pakistan and Delhi also felt the tremors of the earthquake.
A massive earthquake struck Afghanistan four days ago
The death toll from the recent massive earthquake in Afghanistan's Kunar province has risen to 1,457, while more than 3,394 people have been injured. According to local media reports, more than 6,700 houses have collapsed and international relief agencies are still struggling to reach people trapped in remote areas. Rescue workers are busy removing bodies from the rubble, but officials say rescue operations are still incomplete.
Earthquake victims are suffering from lack of water, food and medical facilities. The Taliban administration has claimed that humanitarian aid has been delivered to many families and roads to remote areas have been opened. Also, special rescue teams from many countries have joined the relief operations. Due to inaccessible mountainous terrain and heavy devastation, it is proving extremely difficult to reach the most needy people.
31 August: An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred
According to the US Geological Survey, the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 11:47 pm local time on August 31, at a depth of eight kilometers. The earthquake-affected area is extremely sensitive from a seismic point of view because the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet here. The hilly terrain further increases the risk of landslides, making rescue operations difficult.
International organisations, including the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation, are engaged in relief work. Aid has also been sent from India, Japan, Iran and Turkey. Relief agencies say access problems are delaying essential supplies and medical services. An earthquake in the same region in October 2023 killed more than 1,500 people, while another earthquake in 2022 also killed more than 1,000 people.
