The festival of Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of Diwali and holds great significance in Sanatan Dharma. On this auspicious day, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari to invite wealth, health, and prosperity into their lives. Shopping and performing special rituals on Dhanteras are believed to bring good fortune.
According to tradition, performing a few simple rituals in the evening can attract the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and ensure financial stability.
1. Prepare a Dhanvarsha (Wealth-Bearing) PotliMaking a Dhanvarsha Potli on Dhanteras evening is believed to bring prosperity, remove financial troubles, and attract positive energy into the home. This sacred bundle represents Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings and symbolizes continuous wealth and success.
To prepare it, you will need:
-
Two pieces of turmeric
-
A silver coin
-
A photo of Goddess Lakshmi
-
Two betel nuts
-
Two Gomati Chakras
-
Two cowries
-
Five lotus seeds
-
Two green cardamoms
-
Two cloves
-
Yellow rice (Akshat)
-
Some coriander seeds
Place all these items on a clean cloth during the evening puja. Offer them to Goddess Lakshmi, then tie the cloth into a small bundle (potli) and keep it in your safe or place of worship. It is believed that this ensures a constant flow of money, success in business, and peace at home.
2. Light Lamps (Diyas) for Positivity and ProsperityLighting lamps on Dhanteras evening is a time-honored tradition that signifies the removal of darkness and negativity. It is considered auspicious to light diyas in every room of the house and near the main entrance.
The gentle flame of a diya spreads warmth, positivity, and prosperity while protecting the home from negative energies and the evil eye. Lighting lamps during Lakshmi Puja or in the evening is especially beneficial, as it is said to invite divine blessings, peace, and abundance.
The more lamps you light on this day, the more auspicious the results are believed to be — filling the home with brightness, harmony, and the presence of Goddess Lakshmi.
