Less than two days are left for the US presidential election and more than 50 percent of the country's population has already cast their votes through early voting. According to a survey by Five Thirty-Eight, Vice President Kamala Harris is leading by 1.2 points. But this small margin is starting to look very easy for former President Donald Trump, as he is improving his performance survey after survey.
In a close fight, even a few votes can have a big impact, so Kamala Harris has her eyes set on the people of the Indian community. While celebrating Diwali on Saturday, she also narrated stories related to her India, she is trying to woo Indians during her campaign. However, it is not so easy for Kamala, some recent decisions taken by the Biden administration regarding India may prove to be costly for Kamala Harris.
The US has imposed sanctions on nearly 400 organizations and individuals, including 19 Indian companies, for allegedly supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine. Earlier too, the US had echoed Canada's allegations against India. This move by the Biden administration before the elections may turn the Indian community away from the Democratic candidate, which will have a direct impact on Kamala Harris' dream of becoming president.
India's answer to AmericaJust hours after the ban on Indian companies, India's Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, 'We have seen reports on US sanctions. India has a strong legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade and nonproliferation controls. We are also a member of three major multilateral nonproliferation export control regimes - Wassenaar Agreement, Australia Group, and Missile Technology Control Regime and are effectively implementing UNSC sanctions and UNSC Resolution 1540 to prevent the rapid spread of nuclear weapons.'
India further said that according to us the banned transactions and companies do not violate Indian laws. Nevertheless, we are working closely with all the companies to stop the proliferation of weapons.
US stance on Canada tensionsLast week, Canada had claimed that an Indian minister was behind violence and intimidation campaigns on Canadian soil. US Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the allegations made by the Canadian government are worrying and we will continue to consult with the Canadian government about those allegations. However, after this allegation by Canada, India summoned the Canadian ambassador and lodged a protest rejecting the allegations.
This is not the first time the Biden administration has taken action against India on Canada's allegations. Last month, when Canada accused Indian officials of involvement in the murder of a pro-Khalistan leader, the US also echoed Canada's sentiments.
At that time, White House spokesman Matthew Miller had said, "As far as the Canadian case is concerned, we have made it clear that the allegations are very serious and should be taken seriously. We want the Indian government to cooperate with Canada in its investigation." Miller further said that India has not done so and has chosen an alternative path.
Indian VotersSuch statements and decisions of the Democratic presidential administration before the elections can spread discontent in the hearts of Indians, which will directly affect the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who is currently getting weaker in front of Donald Trump. Although the votes of Indian origin are less than 2 percent in the whole of America, their importance has increased a lot in swing states and close contests. Now it remains to be seen whether the voters of Indian origin leave the Democratic candidate over America's action against India or not.
