Kashmiri students abused, assaulted, asked to leave by landlords

In video messages shared on social media, Kashmiri students studying in colleges in Uttarakhand have been asked to leave the state by 10 am on Thursday, 24 April. While sharing the video on X, Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association (JKSA) convenor Nasir Khuehami has urged state governments in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and other states to prevent harassment of innocent students in the wake of the on Tuesday.

In Dehradun, Hindu Raksha Dal and other right-wing elements have allegedly issued written threats to several colleges, demanding the expulsion of Kashmiri Muslim students and setting a chilling ultimatum of 10 am on Thursday. While sharing a video, Khuehami claimed, “Around 20 terrified Kashmiri students from BFIT College in Sudhowala, Dehradun, have fled towards Jolly Grant Airport to save their lives.”

One Lalit Sharma on behalf of Hindu Raksha Dal issued the threat and said that HRD volunteers would search from door to door on Thursday and mete out ‘proper treatment’ to Kashmiri Muslims in Dehardun and Uttarakhand. Issuing an ultimatum, he asked Kashmiri Muslims to escape from Dehradun by 10 am on 24 April. Uttarakhand chief minister has been urged to take action by JKSA.

In a post Khuehami claimed, “Recieved Distress Calls from Universal Group of Institutions, Derabassi, Chandigarh, where Kashmiri students were brutally attacked inside the hostel premises during the night. Students said that, local individuals and other students forcefully entered the hostel at midnight, targeting Kashmiri students with sharp weapons. Their clothes were torn, and at least one student sustained serious injuries.” In Kharar a group of students from Haryana were reported to have abused Kashmiri students and had a verbal altercation.

JKSA claims to have received multiple distress calls from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. Landlords there are asking Kashmiri students to leave immediately citing security concerns and apprehension of attacks and vandalism by radical elements. Khuehami claimed he had got in touch with the UP chief minister’s office and

was assured of urgent help. Some students have already left under pressure.

“We have received frantic distress calls from Kashmiri students from Arni University, Kathghar (Indora), in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh who are being harassed, abused, and physically attacked by right-wing and fringe elements. Hostel doors are being forcefully broken down, and students are being intimidated, labelled as 'Atankwadi' (terrorists), and coerced to vacate their accommodation under threats and violence,” reads another post shared by him overnight.

Received multiple distress calls from Kashmiri students and youth in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Landlords are asking them to vacate immediately, citing security concerns. Some have already left under pressure. This is alarming. Prayagraj is a sensitive region, and there are growing fears of harassment and profiling.

"No cause, no ideology can ever justify such barbarity... Terror has no religion, no justification — it must be condemned in the strongest possible terms and countered with unity, resolve, and justice. This tragedy has shaken us all, and we, too, mourn this heartbreaking loss," JKSA national president Ummar Jamal told the PTI.
