Liam then added: "We all know how damaged she is. Prison hasn’t helped. If we put her back inside then that’s it for her - her life is over. She’ll be even worse than she is now. We all know what it’s like to feel unloved but Ella never really got the chance to grow up. It’s a thousand times worse for her. Ella needs proper rehabilitation.

"If we put her back in prison, it’s just a temporary fix. Even if she goes down for this, then she’s going to be released sometime soon and we’ll be looking over our shoulders for the rest of our lives. If she gets proper professional help now, that is a permanent solution."

Could this lead to a return for Ella despite her being locked up during last night's episode?

Paula Lane - who played Ella - spoke out about her exit. She said: "I just wanted to say I have had a lovely time here. I've met some wonderful people and I will really, really cherish the experience. I want to thank you all for your lovely support and messages and I hope you get to see me on some new dramas in the future. Or on stage, or wherever life now takes me in my career.

"But honestly everything is all positive, there's no negatives to spin on this. She is a brilliant character, and never say never. Who knows. Lots of love from me, over and out."
