Denton dog attack: Baby suffers life-changing injuries as victims 'covered in blood'

A baby has suffered life-changing injuries following a horror which left victims "covered in blood".

Greater Police confirmed in a statement this morning that a one-year-old child was one of three victims of a bloody dog attack on Thursday. The tot was rushed to hospital yesterday evening after sustaining "serious and life-changing injuries to her face" after the incident on Baslow Road in Denton, Tameside. GMP said it dispatched its Tactical Dog Unit and Tactical Aid Unit "alongside colleagues in the ambulance service" to the scene following a call at around 5.50pm, and that three victims were hospitalised.

An air ambulance was also rushed to the scene to treat the young child and two other victims - a 21-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man.

A spokesperson for the service confirmed the one-year-old is still being treated in hospital, while the other two victims suffered "serious but not life-threatening or life-changing" injuries.

They added the specialist tactical dog unit detained the animal at the scene, and it was "humanely destroyed" to "ensure the safety of the public". Footage taken at the scene shows officers escorting a leashed brown dog of unclear breed into the back of a van as neighbours watch on.

Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Jenkins of GMP’s Tameside District said the young girl's family is "incredibly distressed" by what happened on Thursday. He said: “This was an awful attack that has left a 1-year-old girl with serious and life-changing injuries. Her family are understandably incredibly distressed by what happened here last night.

“The family of the young girl are being supported by officers as she recovers in hospital. A scene remains in place on Baslow Road in Denton in the immediate aftermath so officers can make further enquiries to establish a full timeline of events that led to this incident, we thank the local community for their patience and cooperation at this time."

Police have appealed for information regarding the attack, with the Superintendent saying people may have footage vital to their inquiries.

He said: "There were people in the area specifically on Baslow Road who may have dashcam, CCTV or mobile footage from yesterday afternoon that may be of assistance to our enquiries."
