Navi Mumbai: Raigad Police successfully destroyed a total of 52.039 kilograms of narcotics seized in 15 cases registered across 12 police stations in the district, marking a significant step in the enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act).
The seized contraband included 50.992 kg of ganja and 1.047 kg of charas, valued at approximately ₹8,48,318. These drugs were confiscated from cases registered at the police stations of Karjat, Nagothane, Neral, Poynad, Mandwa Coastal, Revdanda, Mahad Taluka, Vadkhal, Goregaon, Rasayani, Murud, and Khopoli.
The destruction was carried out under the legal provisions of Section 52A(2) of the NDPS Act on April 15, 2025, in the presence of a high-level committee constituted for this purpose. The committee comprised Superintendent of Police, Raigad Somnath Gharge, Additional Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Shivthare, Acting Deputy Superintendent of Police, Headquarters (Home), Parshuram Kamble and Police Inspector of the Local Crime Branch, Balasaheb Khade.
“The entire procedure took place at the Mumbai Waste Management Limited (MWML) facility in MIDC Road, Taloja, Navi Mumbai. The event was conducted with full legal compliance and was supervised by forensic and pollution control authorities,” Raigad SP Somnath Gharge said.
Present at the destruction were A.S. Gavkar, Assistant Chemical Analyst from the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory, Kalina, Mumbai; Dr. Gajanan Khadkikar, Field Officer, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Raigad; and Mr. Suresh Devkate, Inspector of Weights and Measures, Alibaug Division. Two government-appointed panch (witnesses) were also in attendance.
The operation was executed efficiently by a team led by Police Inspector Balasaheb Khade and included police officers Paresh Vilas Mhatre, Sachin Suresh Shelar, Archana Patil, Julita Bhoir, and Swami Gawand from the Local Crime Branch, Raigad-Alibaug.
