The hashtag #BoycottSaiPallavi is trending on X (formerly Twitter) as actress Sai Pallavi faces backlash over a resurfaced video from 2022. In the clip, Pallavi discusses the perception of violence between India and Pakistan, sparking outrage online. The controversy arises just as Pallavi prepares for two major projects. She will star in the Tamil movie Amaran, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and produced by Kamal Haasan. Based on India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military, the film features Sivakarthikeyan alongside Pallavi and is scheduled for release on October 31. Additionally, she will portray Sita in Nitesh Tiwari's highly anticipated Ramayana, opposite Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama.
During the interview, Pallavi had commented, “People in Pakistan view our army as a terrorist group, just as we might see them the same way. Perspectives change. I don’t understand violence.” The statement has ignited a storm on social media, with many criticizing the actress for equating perspectives on military forces across borders.
In the midst of the backlash, Pallavi visited the National War Memorial in Delhi ahead of Amaran promotions. On Instagram, she shared her emotional experience, writing: "I visited the #NationalWarMemorial before starting the promotions for #Amaran. It was overwhelming to pay my respects to Major Mukund Varadarajan AC (P) and Sepoy Vikram Singh SC (P), who made the ultimate sacrifice for us."
While some have come to Pallavi’s defense, arguing that her comments were taken out of context, others continue to demand a boycott. Despite the controversy, the actress is also gearing up for her next pan-India film, Thandel, alongside Naga Chaitanya, slated for release next year.
The role of Sita in Ramayana could be the biggest milestone of Pallavi’s career, but the ongoing backlash threatens to overshadow her upcoming projects.
