Selena Gomez asked by an Indian fan to chant 'Jai Shree Ram': Check the pop diva's reaction

No one is more adept at embarrassing an Indian than a fellow Desi. One such antic by an unnamed Indian man has left many Desi netizens red-faced. The video, which has now gone viral on the Internet for the wrong reasons, shows an Indian man meeting the ‘Calm Down’ hitmaker at what appears to be a mall and urging her to chant “Jai Shree Ram." The pop sensation politely turned him down while smiling dazzlingly for the cameras. However, she appears to pacify the fan by saying, “Thank you, Honey.”

For the uninitiated, the phrase is a Hindu chant, which translates to “Victory to Lord Ram.” Lord Ram is one of the chief deities in the Hindu pantheon.

Video Goes Viral

The short clip gained about 18K likes on Instagram. Several netizens took to the comment section to express their disapproval of the man’s uncouth behavior. “Don’t you guys feel embarrassed?” Asked one user. “I am embarrassed on his behalf,” wrote another. Another berated the man for making things awkward. “There are so many things in the world, yet you came up with making her say Jai Shri Ram...bro, you ruined your only chance.” read the comment. “I am a Hindu, and this is embarrassing,” commented another.

Photographer Pallav Paliwal initially posted the video on Instagram, noting, “One of our followers encountered Selena Gomez, and she greeted them with ‘Jai Shri Ram’ for Diwali.” Although Paliwal suggested the video is recent, Selena’s hairstyle, jewelry, and attire all suggest the interaction actually occurred during last year’s Cannes Film Festival in France.

The video was also posted on X with the caption, “A Hindu man met Selena Gomez and requested her to chant ' Jai Shree Ram,' only for her to ignore him.” One user commented, “I don’t understand why people feel the need to embarrass themselves.” Another questioned, “Is ‘Namaste’ no longer our way of greeting?” A different user added, “I’m getting secondhand embarrassment from this.”
