The Noida International Airport, which has missed several deadlines since its foundation stone was laid in November 2021, will start operating in November this year, industrial development minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi' announced on Saturday.
Gupta, while speaking in a review meeting of the Yamuna Expressway Development Authority (YEIDA), said, "During the SP and BSP govts, the airport project would surface only around elections before disappearing again, like a genie back into its bottle. But in the past eight years, work actually moved beyond files gathering dust. And now, the airport is set to be fully completed by Nov this year. It will be the largest airport in Asia and the fourth largest in the world."
This comes amid several missed deadlines. The airport was originally scheduled to be complete by September 2024. However, the timeline was postponed to April this year, then pushed to May-June because of pending work on the terminal building. In March, chief minister Yogi Adityanath had set a May 15 deadline for domestic flights and June 25 for international operations.
According to officials of Noida International Airport Ltd, the concessionaire presented a phased timeline during a review meeting last month. It said that cargo and domestic operations were expected by September 15, and full international services beginning in November.
However, as the deadline approaches and the construction work continues, meeting the November deadline seems easier said that done. The airport project still needs crucial approvals, including security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Officials said that the project is 80 per cent complete, while the runway and airside infrastructure is more than 90 per cent done. The passenger terminal building is progressing steadily, with roofing and interior work currently in force.
Supporting infrastructure has also seen significant development. A 750-metre interchange and internal roads connecting the airport with the Yamuna Expressway are complete. Water and sewage treatment plants, which were 40 per cent ready in March, are now advancing rapidly.
Furthermore, the air traffic control building and the installation of CNS/ATM systems by the Airports Authority of India are also nearing completion.
The state government has now imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), since January 1 since the project is getting delayed every month.
Once complete, this 1,334-hectare project will be NCR's second full-fledged commercial airport, after Delhi's IGI.
Hindon terminal in Ghaziabad, which is under the Indian Air Force, has also started commercial flights to metro cities.
